Welcome to the Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek (FOLKC) was incorporated in April 2001 and held its first planting on 3rd June 2001. Since then there have been countless planting days and other working bees with over 1,000 volunteers of all ages, planting in excess of 30,000 trees, shrubs and under-storey plants along the creek from Barnes Road to Grieve Parade... Nature Reserve & Walking Trail Project

FOLKC is hoping that its application for a grant from Vision for Werribee Plains is successful thus allowing us to upgrade the reserve on the west side of the Creek between Dohertys Road and Barnes Road, Altona North.
This project to build a walking trail, install tables and seating and to rabbit proof the entire site is supported by Toyota, Toll and Altona Memorial Park, along with help from Hobsons Bay City Council and Melbourne Water.
The end result will see a nature reserve and a 2,000 metre walking path with indigenous trees, shrubs and understorey planted throughout that is available for use by the Hobsons Bay community. At the completion of this project, it is estimated that approximately $750,000 will have been injected into the nature reserve.?
Thanks to all our partners in this development and in particular to Millers Inn who have been behind all of the developments of the Creek since FOLKC?s inception in 2001.
This will be a fantastic result for Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek Inc.

Wide Bend Conservation Zone Project

Considerable interest has been shown by Councillor Tony Briffa in including this project for initial planning in the 2009/10 HBCC Budget with the possibility of completing the project in 2010/11.
The project was submitted by FOLKC to EPA for funding last year but it failed to be put forward for funding by HBCC at the time as other projects in Hobsons Bay were considered more pressing.
This project, when complete, will link Cherry Lake via an elevated walking trail through the Wide Bend Conservation Area to the Road Trail network on Kororoit Creek Road. This little known area of Altona will then be open to allow the visual exploration of the conservation zone and to give the public the opportunity to observe the flora and fauna in the area through a number of bird hides along the length of the shared walkway.

Councillor Michael Raffoul

Councillor Michael Raffoul, Ward Councillor for Altona North, which includes Brooklyn and Laverton, is a very keen supporter of our group and we were very pleased that he could spare the time to meet with us at the February Committee meeting.
FOLKC has high hopes that Councillor Raffoul will push for the inclusion of the development of the Kororoit Creek trail between Brooklyn and Altona North in the 2009/10 Hobsons Bay City Council budget. This trail will connect the Brooklyn community to Altona North, a long overdue linkage of the two suburbs, which will link Altona North community to Brooklyn, the Federation Trail to Werribee and the soon to be completed trail to Brimbank.

National Tree day 2008

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek's National Tree Day 2008 sponsored by Toyota was held along the escarpment below Toyota Manufacturing Plant in Altona North on Sunday 27th July 2008.

Despite the mud, rain, sleet, cold and every other imaginable lousy condition, in excess of 150 people attended and appeared to have a fantastic day planting day as a bedragled Edvardo and accordion entertained the very many children that attended the event with their parents.

Overall, on the day, the planters planted 1500 indigenous trees and shrubs, drank copious quantities of tea and coffee, consumed 20 kg of lollies and chocolate and ate in excess of 400 BBQ hot dogs and sausages that were cooked by the Altona Lions.

In all, a wonderful National Tree Day 2008
